Inspired by the world around her, Robyn Williams' art practice involves experimentation across a diverse range of media, including textiles, glasswork, printing, painting, eco-dyeing, and botanical drawing on paper.
Williams' primary interest lies in investigating specific sites, visually responding to the discoveries she makes. Her practice includes photographing and identifying plant species, along with seeking evidence of fauna and bird species present in an area. Collected natural materials such as plant matter, bark, seedpods, seaweed, and shells form the foundational elements of her artwork, which manifests in paper-based creations, textile pieces, and three-dimensional installations. The land itself provides both the inspiration and the materials for Williams' creations, making each piece a collaboration with nature. Currently, Williams is documenting the ecological destruction and subsequent regeneration of her Tinpot home on the Tuross River and the surrounding forest following the devastating 2019/20 Badja Forest Road fire.
Williams' practice is deeply informed by her extensive education, including studies in Textile Design at Strathfield TAFE, Certificates 2 and 3 in Visual Arts at Bega TAFE, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Curtin University, and an Advanced Diploma in Transpersonal Art Therapy from the College of Complementary Medicine. Additionally, her artistic development is enriched by active participation in numerous group and solo exhibitions, as well as site-specific art projects.
Robyn Williams continues to share her extensive skills and knowledge through collaborative efforts with Rebus Theatre and Project Alchemy, the Move, Draw, Sing, Restore creative workshops, and by facilitating the Nature Stories workshop series in Cobargo.
